The Naughty Normans and the South Downs

4 February 2021 – 4pm-5.30pm

 

Session aims and outcomes
  1. Using Learning Outside the Classroom in Sussex to deliver specific curriculum topic of the Normans.
  2. Encouraging schools and students to link occurrences in their studies to the South Downs in Sussex.
  3. Encouraging schools to consider a Norman Sussex History study day or trip.
Session outline

Kevin Newman, local author of the two Sussex editions of ‘Visitors’ Historic Britain’ books and ‘Historic England: Sussex’ links classroom studies of the Normans to Norman sites across the South Downs in Sussex. We investigate the impact of the Norman division of Sussex and William’s programme of castle building had to the area that is today the South Downs National Park and see what impact these invaders left behind. All Inclusive History have run since 2014 a range of history trips, tours and training as well as workshops and staff CPD sessions for Sussex PGCE students, history networks, the Youth University, Aspire and other groups/ schools. Kevin also is a partner in Sussex-based education company, Edhome who provide resources for home schooled children and writes and films history videos for Vidlearn. He has provided a large number of talks, tours and training using Zoom and has experience in providing CPD in numerous Sussex schools, the last of which where he was Assistant headteacher. He currently provides teacher training for Hodder Education.

Target Audience

KS2/3/4 – we are happy to do one session for CPD to boost subject knowledge and further sessions for pupils if needed.

Session aims and outcomes
  1. Using Learning Outside the Classroom to deliver specific curriculum areas through the South Downs in poetry and writing
  2. Encouraging schools and students to create their own writing about the South Downs after exploring the verse and prose of Sussex poets and writers past and present
  3. Encouraging students to investigate further Sussex writers who have lived in and near, written about, or been inspired by the Downs
Session outline

We investigate the Roman village of Park Brow, discover a terrific hilltop temple and see what clues the Romans left behind. All-Inclusive History have run since 2014 a range of
history trips, tours and training as well as workshops and staff CPD sessions for Sussex PGCE students, history networks, the Youth University, Aspire and other groups/ schools. Kevin also is a partner in Sussex-based education company, Edhome who provide resources for home-schooled children and writes and films history videos for Vidlearn.   2. Encouraging schools and students to link their studies of WWI/II & Tudor warfare to the South Downs in Sussex.
  3. Encouraging schools to consider a wartime Sussex History study day or trip involving the Sussex Downs.
Session outline

We investigate wartime defences, prisoners of war, air raids and secret bunkers as well as what people living near the Downs got up to.
